The Military Heroes® Golf Classic
The Fifth Annual Military Heroes Golf Classic held on
Thursday, September 18 at Westfields Golf Club was described by some
as the best ever. Thirty-four teams competed last Thursday at the Foundation’s
Military Heroes® Golf Classic fundraiser, with PriceWaterhouseCoopers’
team becoming the first to have their names engraved as "Champions"
on the traveling trophy, donated by Boardman Silversmiths.
Seventeen wounded warriors from Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) and one from Bethesda
National Naval Medical Center golfed as our honored guests. SGT Nick Firth, who appeared in the
Night of Heroes DVD playing the guitar, was a volunteer on the beverage cart, and two more
WRAMC guests joined us for dinner. Our special guest, Senator Chuck Robb, gave the players a
send off to start the tournament. Former Washington Wizard Ladell Echols was a guest golfer.
Matt Kayson, PGA/head golf professional at the Armed Forces Retirement Home, returned with the
popular "Beat the Pro" contest, and the Maserati parked at Hole #3 attracted many admirers. Bose,
Inc donated an MP3 player and Bose headphones for each wounded warrior, and we continued our tradition
of unusual and exciting door prizes for all, with the Marine K-Bar knives from Dick Schneider among the
most popular.
Sponsorships brought in $132,450 and an additional $10,720 was raised
onsite. The cane carved by a wounded warrior’s uncle brought in $1,450
alone at the auction. The cane will be donated for use at WRAMC. Funds
raised from the event will go directly to support the foundation’s programs
because all administrative expenses are paid for by Pentagon Federal
Credit Union.
